An Ethical Analysis of the Barry Bonds Steroid Case

Recent testimony in the Barry Bonds case reflects the use of steroids by the professional baseball player. Bonds told a grand jury that he had no knowledge that his personal trainer was distributing steroids to him, and believed that the substances his trainer prescribed were “flaxseed oil” and a “rubbing balm for his arthritis.” (Associated Press, 2004) While one might wonder how a professional baseball player could overlook that these readily available supplements were costing him in the thousands of dollars, the ethical implications of Bonds’ testimony within the scope of professional athleticism is significant. This paper briefly identifies the ethical issues in the case.
