Western Culture and Gender Roles.

This paper will focus on the historical roots of these gender roles. Specifically a selection of texts from classical Greece and the Christian heritage of western culture will be examined. Initially, the creation myth as it is presented in "Genesis" will be analyzed. Subsequently, a selection from the writings of the classical Greek philosopher Aristotle will be considered. Analysis of both of these texts will serve to establish the roots of patriarchy in the two streams of thought at the basis of western culture. Finally, the work of Plutarch will be considered. 7 pgs. 9 f/c. 3b.
