Jewish Studies: Analyzing the Altruism of Christian Holocaust Rescuers in When Light Pierced the Darkness by Nechama Tec

This paper will examine the book “When Light Pierced the Darkness” by Nechama Tec. Tec defines the rescuer of Jews in Poland during the Holocaust of the Third Reich. By having multiple proven attempts to save the lives of Jews in Nazi camps, Tec defines this as the altruism, which ultimately made these Christians ‘righteous’ in their courage and commitment. Christians that had committed one rescue would not be considered in this study as rescuers, as these rescues might have been accidental or a one time opportunity by a more selfish motive.
