This paper provides a detailed analysis of Machiavelli's 16th century treatise, The Prince. In this work, Machiavelli indicates the qualities of a great ruler, what kinds of military work best, and the most effective methods for keeping social order. Its main premise is that social order is kept when people are ruled with fear. As well, ruler might need to act with cruelty to ensure his authority, and qualities of virtue are best used as a social appearance but not in maintaining his position as ruler. 5 pgs.
