Social Penetration Theory and Relationships in Bosnia
This paper examines the role that social penetration theory (which relies heavily upon the metaphor of the onion to describe the development of close relationships) can be employed to describe the relationship between Jasmina and Suljo in the memoir The River Runs Salt, Runs Sweet by Jasmina Dervisevic-Cesic. In the end, it would seem that while the theory is useful in describing the outset of the relationship, it cannot account for the extraordinary circumstances that drew the two even closer.
