This paper discusses the art of Romare Bearden, showing how the artist expresses himself in terms of autobiography and metaphor, based on a mixture of different cultures so that the art literally crosses borders, including elements of western, African, and Asian art, as well as aspects of literature and music. This is considered in terms of what connects with the viewer and what does not.
