Weapons and Tactics: An Analysis of Commerce Warfare in the First and Second World Wars

This eight page graduate paper analyzes naval weapons and tactics during World War I and World War II. The author notes that the commerce warfare that raged upon the world’s oceans during the First and Second World Wars demonstrated the relationship between weaponry developments and tactics, and revealed the influence that weapons systems and associated tactics had on the nature and conduct of war at sea. These two great conflicts provide historical proof that tactics must be developed in response to weaponry innovations and improvements, for new weapons systems require new tactics if they are to be deployed successfully by one’s own forces or countered effectively by the enemy.
