Sino-American Relations and the Transcontinental Railroad
This paper examines the role that Chinese immigrant labor played in the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the wake of the Civil War in the United States. The paper considers the socio-cultural forces that brought Chinese en masse to California, the conditions suffered by Chinese workers on the construction, and the resulting discrimination that the Chinese faced because of their apparent inability to be assimilated into mainstream white culture in the United States.
